“Holy shit,” Gwen said breathlessly, maneuvering her car into a tight space among the many other partygoers a block down from the church. “It’s barely 7:30 and the party is already popping off.”

She and Satan exited her sedan (well, Gwen had to shimmy her way out given the close proximity of a Dodge Ram next to her) and met up on the empty street. It was dark in the neighborhood they were in, as were most neighborhoods in Felton. It was a heavily forested town, with more trees than people, and not much light was available from a walking distance. There were no streetlights to guide them, just the moon and the warm glow from within the sporadic houses that lined the street.

“Have I told you how resplendent you look?” Satan asked, taking her hand.

“Not in the last five minutes,” she replied, smirking.

“Five whole minutes? I’m getting sloppy.”

She stared at him smiling, taking him in. In the darkness, his skin was the color of rich mahogany and his eyes were almost too black to see. Her attention was drawn to his gleaming horns, twinkling with the moon’s reflection. She was beyond thrilled they were out together, in public. She didn’t know if she should call it a date, but it felt like one. It made him more real to her, to share him with other people and for them to witness his existence. For others to witness their existence as a couple. Or whatever they were.

“Oh— your phone is ringing,” Satan said, letting go of her hand to draw the phone from his pocket. Her costume was effectively pocketless so she had to use him as her walking purse.

“It’s Cody,” she explained, staring at the screen and swiping. “Hey Codge. Are you here?”

“Uhhhh no. First of all, you know I’m always fashionably late. I did however just look at my phone to see a text from you regarding the address. Gwen, are you serious?”

“Unfortunately.”

“Are you okay?”

She inhaled slowly. “Yeah.”

“Convincing.”

“Well, I’m not blowing confetti out of my ass in celebration if that’s what you wanted.”

“You know that I’ve always wanted you to roleplay as my personal piñata but…seriously. We don’t have to go to this.”

“We’re already here.”

“Shit, really? How is it?”

“Well…we’re down the block.”

“Take your time. I’ll try to hurry up over here.”

“I’ll be okay. I have Satan here with me.”

“I cannot possibly think of anyone better suited to help guide you through your religious trauma than Satan himself.”

Gwen laughed. “I love you.”

“I love you more.”

“Thank you for supporting me.”

“It’s an easy gig,” Cody said as Gwen smiled into the phone. “Okay, I gotta get ready. See you soon.”

“Drive safe.”

She ended the call and handed the phone back to Satan. After pocketing it, he wove his large fingers through hers as they stared at each other.

“Are you ready?” he asked, squeezing her hand. She was about to nod but realized something.

“Wait, is this what you’re wearing?” With all the excitement (and trauma “sharing”) happening that night, she totally forgot about his costume.
